Background

Kylie has been working in the legal profession since 2002 and is currently a Barrister at the private bar in Queensland. Kylie works in a variety of areas including criminal law which includes industrial manslaughter, and she has a strong interest in human rights and domestic violence advocacy. 

Kylie’s practice also involves Family Law, Administrative, Judicial Review, Inquests/Inquiries and Civil Law, and she does Appellate Advocacy in a variety of areas. She has a strong interest in human rights, refugee rights and issues affecting the criminal justice system.

Aside from working in private practice, Kylie has worked in a variety of roles at the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and at Legal Aid Queensland. Kylie appears regularly on complex matters and on appeals at all levels, from the District Court to the High Court.

She has recently appeared for the family of Hannah Clarke at the inquest into her death and that of her three children, and has also recently appeared for Women’s Legal Service Queensland at the public hearings of the independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence. 

Kylie has held a variety of committee and company roles. She is a current member of the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Sub-Committee of the Bar Association of Queensland and is a current member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the  Australian Bar Association. Kylie has also been an active member of the Women Lawyers’ Association of Queensland, was Vice President for 3 years and remained on the committee for 6 years overall.  She was a founding director of the Asia Pacific Professionals Association Ltd, who in 2016 were the event planning sponsors for the Rosie Batty Roadshow running across 6 states raising funds for Women’s Legal Service in each state. Kylie has also been the Chair of National Advocacy for Soroptimist International Australia, Secretary for the International Commission of Jurists Brisbane Chapter, and President of the Association of Labor Lawyers Queensland (only the second woman to hold that position) and was on the committee for a number of years.
